In the wide and wonderful world of wine you’ll find around 60 or more synonyms for one of our favourite varieties – Mataro. There’s the well-known ones such as Mourvedre and Monastrell and lesser known ones such as Balzac and Exparte. Now we love the mutts at Teusner (where dogs can sometimes out number humans!)…so it’s somewhat ironic that we chose this particular name for Mataro…Estrangle Chien in France…The Dog Strangler in the Barossa!

Select parcels of old vine Mataro have been sourced from all over the Barossa…from Vine Vale, Greenock, Moppa and Ebenezer…all vinified separately to produce a wine that is complex and a pleasure to drink. There’s plenty of dark plum, mulberry fruits and five spice character on this Dog’s nose. Rich, savoury and spicy on the palate…all the stuff that makes us love this variety in abundance. This Dog is clearly ‘Best in Show’!”

Sourced from vineyards located around the perimeter of most of the entire valley! The increasing elevations of these locations brings cooler nights and impacts the grapes to enhance bright acidities and freshness with supporting but not intrusive tannin.

The benefit of sourcing from all over the valley is complexity. We get the bright fresh Asian/North African spices from the deep sands, lifted red summer fruits from the northern red clays and savoury richness from the southern loams. Climatically these sub regions are also quite distinct from each other which helps build the complexity in the wine. 2018 was pretty dry – 80% of average spring rainfall and only 50% of average summer rainfall. Warm but not excessively hot temps throughout the growing season combined with low rainfalls led to juicy, rich and concentrated reds with good structure and balance.

The wine is only just medium bodied, which, when combined with the bright acidity and the complex but fresh aromatic makes it such a refreshing and enjoyable drink that can be enjoyed with almost any food!

Whilst Shiraz might be the poster boy for the Barossa, we believe blending it with Grenache and Mataro produces the best drinking wines from this region. Thanks to our good mates the Riebke brothers and other Barossa growers whose families have stuck by these varieties for the past 100 years or more, we’re privileged to have fruit from very old vines to make our GMS blends. In 2002, our first vintage, we made one wine…an unoaked GMS blend we called Joshua. With that wine selling out quickly, we decided to have a crack at releasing a second wine from the vintage, a different take on the original blend and aged in old seasoned oak for 12 months. Loosely interpreted, Avatar can mean ‘transformation’…so a pretty good moniker for a wine we fondly refer to as the older brother for our Josh’.

The blend percentages for Avatar might change each vintage, but the recipe doesn’t vary much…Grenache (about 50%) for spice and bright red fruits, Mataro (30%) for some savoury earthiness and depth….Shiraz (20%) for plump plum and rich black fruit. The time in oak…and the choice of old seasoned oak…ensures it serves only as a seasoning to add complexity and savoury nuance. With vines this old, we want the fruit and earth to speak with the clearest voice.”

One of the reasons I love the Barossa…and why it can claim to be ‘sacred Shiraz ground’…is the diversity of the vineyard landscape which allows us to produce so many different expressions of Shiraz from the one region. There’s been plenty of talk in recent years about classifying the various sub regions and I have my own views as to which are the best for Shiraz. The deep sandy soils of Ebenezer, the dry, lean and cooler conditions of the Eden Valley and the low yielding, rocky brown soils of Stonewell to the east of Tanundawould be my picks if anyone was to ask.

The WarkFamily have been growing Shiraz at Stonewell since they planted their vineyard on their farm in 1995. They grow fantastic Barossa Shiraz, and each vintage for the past few years we’ve been taking a bit more of their fruit. In 2013, we released the first ‘WarkFamily Shiraz made solely from fruit grown in their vineyard, with a label painted by artist and now vineyard owner Marnie Wark. This latest release continues the tradition of deeply coloured, rich, black fruited wines with ferrous ripe tannins to match.

With the WarkFamily Shiraz in your glass, you’ve got a wine from a single vineyard in one of the best sub districts in the Valley, planted by the family’s own hand and made by the crew at Teusner….sounds like a bloody good wine to me!!”
