This wild ferment Riesling is bone dry and displays intense lime and citrus flavour, with beautifully balanced acidity. Sourced from the dry grown Bimbadeen vineyard in the Clare Valley, the grapes were picked in early February, crushed and left to ferment naturally. With a further 5 months on yeast lees to develop complexity, the result is a polished wine with a lingering mineral weight on the palate. Perfect for a warm summer’s day.

Vintage: 2018
Grape varieties: 100 % Riesling
Region: Clare Valley , Australia
Winemaker: Darryl Catlin
Closure: Stelvin
Alcohol (ABV): 12%
Acidity: 7.46  g/l
Residual Sugar: 1.76  g/l
Wine pH: 2.91

The dry grown grapes where picked and pressed with no additions and  free run juice was taken (no pressings used) and no sulphur was added at any stage during this whole process. This would allow the grapes to drop any phenolic flavours. The juice was then let to naturally ferment with no yeast being added over a 4 week period at around 14 degrees. It fermented to dryness over this period and no malolactic fermentation took place. Minimal sulphur was added and the wine was then left to sit on its yeast lees to develop mid palate weight for 4  months. This developed complexity and weight.

After this period, the wine was filtered to the bottling line.

Fechner Vineyard experienced near perfect ripening conditions for Gewürztraminer in January, the early start to Spring and Summer meant we picked all three varieties earlier than last year. Late January Rainfall heralded a mild February allowing the East facing Riesling and Weißer Herold block to ripen progressively whilst retaining great natural acidity.

The Fechner brothers’ applauded vineyard is unique for both its spectacular aromatics and unique varietal mix. The blend is 41% hand picked, whole bunch pressed Riesling combined with 38% Gewürztraminer given 12 hours skin contact prior to pressing and 21% Weißer Herold. The cold settled juice parcels were racked without fining prior to co-fermentation to maximise complexity.

Düfte Punkt is an aromatic paradigm-shift. A seamless single-vineyard blend of precise Riesling, spicy Gewürztraminer, and textural Weißer Herold. Striking lychee and turkish delight aromas introduce a complex palate showing lychees, mandarins, minerality and lingering powder-puff of florals.

The goal with this wine is to show off the virtues of classic EDEN VALLEY RIESLING to fanatical Riesling lovers and the Riesling uninitiated. It demonstrates our preferred DRY AND ZESTY style of Riesling with fruit and acidity in perfect balance.

A single Springton vineyard picked on two separate dates to capture both natural acidity/freshness and intensity of flavour. The two parcels were then cold fermented in a stainless steel tank to preserve purtity of fruit then bottled with only a minimal addition of sulphur dioxide.

Floral, lemon/lime and lychee aromas are followed by intense apple, lime and orange blossom on the palate. The wine has great length of palate with the soft refreshing acidity balancing the intensity of fruit and providing the backbone to enable medium to long term cellaring if so desired.

Three old-vine sites experienced near perfect ripening conditions for Riesling in January. The early start to Spring & Summer meant we picked earlier than last year. Late January rainfall heralded a mild February allowing the Riesling to ripen progressively while retaining great natural acidity.

In physics the triple point is the thermodynamic conditions at which the solid, liquid and gaseous phases of a substance coexist in equilibrium. Our quest is for the oft-elusive triple point of riesling: precision, texture & balance. riesling from three old vine sites: Springton, flaxman valley & angaston hills. hand-picked. Whole-bunch pressed. 18 hours skins contact. Exotic aromas of Jasmine, honeysuckle and Mandarin oat alluringly from the glass and lead to a texture laden yet delicate palate evoking new season pink lady apples, mandarin with a nely textured nish of mineral bath salts with a subtle edge of refreshing quinine.

In 2015 the Ahrens family’s certified organic vineyard on the outskirts of Springton in Flaxman Valley (Eden Valley’s riesling heartland) experienced near perfect ripening conditions for riesling in January, the early start to Spring and Summer meant we picked earlier than last year. Late January rainfall heralded a mild February allowing the east facing riesling to ripen progressively whilst retaining great natural acidity. Hand picked on two dates a fortnight apart to capture both natural acidity/freshness and intensity of flavour, the fruit was then gently whole bunch pressed and fermented on solids and bottled without fining with only a minimal addition of sulphur dioxide.

Zeitpunkt - aromas of fresh first rainfall on slaty soil with jasmine white florals lead to a natural acidity tensioned palate, it’s dolomite/ Quartz mineral core adorned with a bounty of nutmeg, cardamom and cinnamon spiced apple, peach and feijoa fruits.

It really is like a sport sometimes.  Making specialised wines does take a fair bit of practice, the right gear, a game plan, buckets of luck and often the desire to travel and challenge thy neighbour on their patch, with their rules and their foreign conditions....... the dreaded 'Away Game'!

Who said we can't do what they do really well?

Eden Valley

2018 Vintage
The 2018 growing season started off well following above average winter rainfall, but it was dry and warm after that. Owing to later veraison in the Eden Valley as opposed to the Barossa floor, the hot spell in January and February did not cause any concern to the Avon Brae vineyard and the vines took it all comfortably in their stride.
Thankfully, Mother Nature did not dish out any adverse events this year and harvest started in March with the whites, and finished on 19 April with the last of the Cabernet blocks. Yields were above average across the board, but quality was good, with Riesling a standout as usual.

2018 Eden Hall Opulence Riesling tasting
This is our first foray into making a sweet Riesling. A parcel of fruit from Block 10 was made separately and the fermentation was stopped by super chilling, retaining some residual sugar and natural acidity, resulting in a wine of low alcohol (7.1%) and 61g/L sugar.
It is pale straw in colour with a highly perfumed nose. The first sip takes you by surprise with full-on fruit sweetness, but the second reveals a balanced, generous palate dominated by Pink Lady apples and cinnamon.
An opulent wine with a lingering finish like a good apple cider, but without the bubbles! Best drunk chilled as an aperitif, or with spicy Asian foods, or at the end with desserts and cheeses – a wine for all occasions! An open bottle kept chilled can be enjoyed over a week or two without deteriorating. Ready to drink now, but will cellar well.

Vintage and Tasting
In a word, the 2016 growing season was dry! Rainfall was well below average through winter and spring and like 2015 there were many late season frosts – indeed at Avon Brae we had our latest frost in living memory on 12 December 2015. Again, like the two previous vintages, the region was devastated by a catastrophic bushfire – this time the Pinery fire burned 86,000 hectares of farming land adjacent to the Barossa from 25 November to 2 December and again the Eden Valley thankfully escaped unscathed which allowed us to lend a hand to our relatives at Freeling. December and early January were warm, but rains at the end of January and early March were god sent and along with milder weather we eventually realised ideal ripening conditions leading up to vintage.
Harvest started early with some of the Riesling on 26 February and this year the Grüner Veltliner was late, coinciding with the last of the reds coming off in early April. The yields were above average for the whites and below average for the reds, but high quality across all varieties. It seems that the Eden Valley is able to handle almost anything that nature throws it way, and still come out on top!
This is only our second Reserve Riesling and this year is made from fruit of Block 7 on the eastern aspect of the lake at Avon Brae. It is pale straw yellow showing a subtle perfumed floral nose. It has a steely acid backbone underlining a complex palate showing lemon with a hint of tangelo.
An aristocratic Eden Valley Rizza that will welcome visitors at any time, but equally could be a recluse and re–engage with high society after many years in hiding!

The 2018 Springton Riesling was carefully blended from 3 different blocks within the Avon Brae Vineyard. (48% Block 10 , 36% Block 11 and 16% Block 7). It is pale straw with a green hue and has a fragrant floral nose of Jasmine. The palate is broad with lime and lemon over guava, displays beautiful length and finishes like a tropical sorbet. An outstanding Eden Valley Riesling from an exceptional vintage. Drinking well now, but like its predecessors is built to last.

This Heirloom Vineyards Riesling was made from our best Eden Valley Vineyard whose manicured old vines embody the very best in cutting edge, but old school viticulture and winemaking. Hand tended vines, sorted bunch by bunch, naturally fermented free run juice, with ambient vineyard and winery yeasts, gently tank pressed and stored on yeast lees for 9 months before bottling.

The̴ colour is bright with beautiful onomatopoeic like green straw tinges at the edges of the glass. Bright and crystal clear with little development. Let it catch the light and marvel at the sparkle.

The aroma is a fragrant and floral beauty. Hyper-intense Eden Valley Riesling smells. This Heirloom Riesling is like smelling spring in Eden Valley, flowers blossoming, especially jasmine and textbook limes and lemon rind but also with hints of gingerbread and lime cordial. Some delicious hints of classic fresh custard and toast characters seem to be emerging in the background.

This palate has that extra dimension, no just fresh and fruity but a marvellously mouth filling juicy palate; a touch of creamy mouth-feel a wonderful part of the landscape. All balanced sweet and zingy citrus but overall a pristine, elegant pure Eden Valley Riesling with flavours that fulfils and refresh. Taught acidity with washed river stone-like minerality which delves into green apples. The definition of Riesling flavour is long, ample and fine. A tight old vine expression of Eden Valley Riesling that has all the hallmarks for a long term cellar life.

An extraordinary Riesling from the Eden Valley that will cellar extraordinarily well but is so deliciously delicious now. Argument for delayed gratification is almost academic.

A three-year search for the perfect riesling site ended almost where the journey began, at the Shaw + Smith Adelaide Hills vineyard back in 2005.

The grapes were crushed and cold-soaked, the juice settled without enzyme and kept at 12 degrees until spontaneous fermentation began.

Small wonder that the wine is so different from other Australian rieslings!

100% Mount Gambier. Single vineyard.

 Vineyard notes

Just 40 minutes south of our Coonawarra vineyards are our Mount Gambier vineyards. Mount Gambier is the coolest region in mainland Australia and has perfect conditions for creating excellent Riesling.

Razor-sharp flint rocks rise from the thin soils under vines, and the pure underground water flows from the famous Blue Lake.

The flint and minerally notes are a hint that it will age for well over 20 years.

We are very proud of our wines - we hope you enjoy them.

High on the slopes of Eden Valley, bright yellow and blue buckets squat between rows of vines. Pickers pedantically divide Riesling grapes row by row – yellow, blue, yellow, blue, yellow, blue.

Overseeing the process, tasting the grapes, stand two of Australia’s best known Riesling makers.

Clare Valley’s Jeffrey Grosset and Eden Valley’s Robert Hill-Smith work together each vintage before taking their chosen grapes – Jeffrey’s in the blue buckets and Robert’s in the yellow - and parting ways to crush and ferment the fruit at different locations.

Debate follows, as the juice is assessed and the final, final, final blend is agreed upon. Each component, nearly identical at the start, undergoes a different conversion into wine, reflecting the personal differences of both men.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season started well, with a lovely season break as the rains started to fall in autumn, followed by above average winter rains. August and spring were drier and warmer than average, giving the vines a very healthy start. An average December was followed by below average temperatures in January, with good rains falling in the second week, keeping the vines healthy and grapes ripening. Ripening conditions, flavours and natural acids were all perfect in Eden Valley this year.

Tasting Note

The final wine is green and vibrant in appearance, with aromas of zesty lemons, grapefruit and a hint of dried green herb and spice. The palate is intense and generous, with lively citrus fruit flavours and hints of talc. The wine finish is clean and dry with refreshing, almost salty acidity.

As is the case with all great Eden Valley Rieslings, mesh will age gracefully and reliably into a mature wine under the screw-cap closure.

Eden Valley

South Australia’s Eden Valley, high in the eastern ranges surrounding the Barossa Valley, averages between 400 and 600 metres in altitude. Soils are rocky grey loam and have high acidity. Winter rainfall is abundant (typically 50% more than the Barossa Valley). Temperatures are up to two degrees cooler than the Barossa Valley and the growing season longer. Cooling breezes from

the region’s gullies and hills ensure gradual ripening and maximum flavour development.

No where to hide…

Of all the many grape varieties, Riesling is the most transparent expression of a vineyard site.  We have long loved the more crystalline expressions of Clare Valley Riesling, which embrace the exquisite risk inherent in delicacy and fragility. Never a wine about winemaker ego, or manhandling in the winery, just purity…

Please handle gently.

Creation
Approximately 50% of the fruit for this wine comes from the hungry rocky soils shared by two high altitude vineyards in the rugged Hills of Penwortham and Sevenhill. The resulting bunches and berries are tiny, but intense. They ripen late in the season but throw a rapier lean acid line. To provide balance, the remaining 50% is sourced from a slightly more fertile northfacing patch in Watervale planted in the 1960’s on red loam over quartz providing more generosity, weight and flavour.

Composition

A deliberately delicate expression of Clare Valley Riesling, exhibiting lifted floral notes, kaffir lime, freshly squeezed lemon juice, grapefruit peel, bath salts, and underlying talc. Classic citrus notes are complimented by the mouth-watering chalky and mineral texture on the palate, finishing with a fine and taut acid line.

Consumption

Tasting Notes

Youthful lime green which will develop in time. Delicate spring blossom and lime leaf with a hint of vanillinspice.
Crunchy green-apple and crisp, vibrant distinctive lemon-lime citrus flavours abound, at once juicy andtangy.
Almost ethereally light and elegant; its minerality wafting along the palate to a long, pleasing close. Impressively delicious and worthy of at least a few years cellaring, if not more than a decade.

Wine Description

Aromatically lifted floral notes of Jasmine flower are followed by fresh lime and lemon blossom intensity. On the palate the citrus characters of lemon and lime create a core of intense flavour supported by an enduring mineral line. Further notes of freshly cut green apple indicate a pure expression of Riesling, and one that showcases the flavours typical to Eden Valley.

Winemaking

Hand harvested, chilled to 6oC and whole bunch pressed. It was our intention to craft the finest example of an Eden Valley Riesling. The emphasis was on retaining only the purest free-run juice and fermenting it cool to savour the delicate aromas. The ferment was taken to dryness after which the wine was gently fined, filtered and bottled.

Vintage 2019

A near perfect ripening season punctuated with weeks of warm dry days and typically cold nights lead to slow but steady favour development and perfect levels of natural acidity at harvest.

A wine that will benefit from at least 20 more years in the cellar.

Harvest Date 2th March 2018 Baume: 11.5 Bottled: June 2018

Wine Analysis Alcohol: 12.5% pH: 3.15 TA: 6.8

Vineyard
The Riesling was hand picked early on the morning if the 2nd March into 1/2 tonne bins from a Vineyard just to the north of Forreston in the Northern Adelaide Hills. The Vineyard is on a steep hill with a southerly aspect, this allows the fruit to develop slowly and retain great natural acidity. Harvested on a combination of acid balance and flavour development with the result a wine that required minimal input.

Winery
Destemmed only and only gently pressed to extract the subtle free run juice with purity of fruit. Settled for 3 days and racked when juice was clear. Allowed to begin ferment naturally then overseeded with a very low rate of a varietal enhancing yeast for 21 days to preserve and enhance the varietal characters. Aged on lees post ferment to build texture and body in the final wine while adding a subtle complexity as well. Clarified and bottled mid June.

Z WINE (Z for Zerk) is the creation of dynamic sisters Janelle and Kristen Zerk. With over 170 years of Barossa heritage behind them they grew up together in the Barossa Valley on a vineyard that has been in the Zerk family for five generations.

The [SAUL] Riesling is sourced from vineyards in the premium Eden Valley region. Aromatic characters of citrus and gooseberry are supported by floral notes. The palate is focused with purity and minerality finishing with crisp acidity. Drink now or cellar 5-15 years.

This wine is drinking beautifully now with intense flavours full of depth and length, but will age elegantly for many years to come. We recommend serving this Riesling chilled with fresh oysters, chilli prawn skewers or cured Atlantic salmon.

Z WINE (Z for Zerk) is the creation of dynamic sisters Janelle and Kristen Zerk. With over 170 years of Barossa heritage behind them they grew up together in the Barossa Valley on a vineyard that has been in the Zerk family for five generations.

The [XAVE] Late Harvest is hand-picked from very ripe bunches of Semillon from Janelle’s Vineyard on Krondorf road along with dry-grown Old Vine Riesling.

Together these varieties have produced an outstanding crisp sweet wine balanced with an amazing acidity showing lemon sorbet, honey, lime and white peach characters. We recommend to serve chilled as an aperitif with goats curd and roast capsicum or for dessert with a citrus lemon and lime tart.
