This Heirloom Vineyards McLaren Vale Shiraz was by acclaimed young Brooks winemaker Elena Brooks in our McLaren Vale Cellars from a single site.
Sourced from our neighbours the McMurtie Family’s extraordinary and low yielding old vines, just adjacent to the Salopian Inn, where Ross McMurtrie, Vigneron was born.
Hand tended vines, sorted bunch by bunch, naturally open fermented, with regular hand plunging and gentle pumping over to extract colour, flavour and tannin.
Aged in some new but mainly 3 and 4 year one-year old French and Bulgarian oak barriques for 16 months.

This Heirloom Vineyards Cabernet was produced from a remarkable Coonawarra Cabernet Vineyard whose clones and viticulture embody the very best in cutting edge but old school viticulture and winemaking. Hand tended vines, sorted bunch-by-bunch, naturally open fermented, basket pressed and stored in French oak barriques from bespoke coopers.
The colour is remarkably vibrant, a bright crimson purple that reflects the 2 years in oak. A core darkness indicates the wine's ripeness and concentration.
It has a classic lift of essential Cabernet fruit aromas, a perfume of dark mulberries with a lift of white mulberries, tayberries and bramble-berries that have been baked with a fresh pie crust. A great heady aroma with rich red ripe fruits but also some hints of crushed violets and whiffs of mushrooms, olives, dried herbs and suggestions of briar and undergrowth wisping in and out. There is also a shot of old school glossy tri-coloured boiled sweets character to this most complex Coonawarra Cabernet. Two years in oak has allowed a meshing of some spice and cedar oak maturation to complex.
The palate is in a word, powerful. Also 3 dimensional. Although serious dark fruits, almost Bordeaux like on the nose, it reveals Super Tuscan type flavours on the palate. Once full-bodied and tannic, now medium bodied, supple and flavoursome. Blackcurrant is dominant but more mulberry fruit on entry, gently fleshy and with elegant and appealing tannin backbone. Good acidity too to balance the generous textural palate with flavours of plum, berry and hints of spearmint chocolate to make a second glass, and we hope a second bottle irresistible. Will age with grace over the coming decades.
An extraordinary Single Vineyard Cabernet from Coonawarra that will cellar well but is so deliciously perfect now any argument for delayed gratification is perhaps academic.

This Heirloom Vineyards Riesling was made from our best Eden Valley Vineyard whose manicured old vines embody the very best in cutting edge, but old school viticulture and winemaking. Hand tended vines, sorted bunch by bunch, naturally fermented free run juice, with ambient vineyard and winery yeasts, gently tank pressed and stored on yeast lees for 9 months before bottling.
The̴ colour is bright with beautiful onomatopoeic like green straw tinges at the edges of the glass. Bright and crystal clear with little development. Let it catch the light and marvel at the sparkle.
The aroma is a fragrant and floral beauty. Hyper-intense Eden Valley Riesling smells. This Heirloom Riesling is like smelling spring in Eden Valley, flowers blossoming, especially jasmine and textbook limes and lemon rind but also with hints of gingerbread and lime cordial. Some delicious hints of classic fresh custard and toast characters seem to be emerging in the background.
This palate has that extra dimension, no just fresh and fruity but a marvellously mouth filling juicy palate; a touch of creamy mouth-feel a wonderful part of the landscape. All balanced sweet and zingy citrus but overall a pristine, elegant pure Eden Valley Riesling with flavours that fulfils and refresh. Taught acidity with washed river stone-like minerality which delves into green apples. The definition of Riesling flavour is long, ample and fine. A tight old vine expression of Eden Valley Riesling that has all the hallmarks for a long term cellar life.
An extraordinary Riesling from the Eden Valley that will cellar extraordinarily well but is so deliciously delicious now. Argument for delayed gratification is almost academic.

This Heirloom Vineyards Shiraz was produced from our best Barossa Shiraz Vineyard whose clones and viticulture embody the very best in cutting edge but old school viticulture and winemaking. Hand tended vines, sorted bunch-by-bunch, naturally open fermented, basket pressed and stored in French oak barriques from bespoke coopers.
This wine has an intense bright purple hue and an inkier royal red carpet colour closer to the center of the glass.
The aroma is an astonishing and lifted brace of blackberries, spice and even a perfume like touch of blueberries. Pure fruit and spice that is not in any way overwhelmed by winemaking artifact. The wine has a concentration of aromas that come from not over-ripe fruits. The smells change quickly in the glass and are fascinating to follow but the mouth beckons.
There is quite a remarkable entry to the palate. A seamless soft but structured shiraz, lots of blackberries again for sure but also a mid-palate dark chocolate spice that whooshes through the mouth that you want to slow it down and check it out. There is some cream and spice from the French Oak and an almost chalk like tannin structure but it's all about the pure fruit.
An extraordinary Shiraz from the Barossa that will cellar well - 10, 20, 30+ or more years, but is so deliciously perfect now any argument for delayed gratification is almost academic.

With pinot noir-like acidity and freshness, shiraz's earth and spice, and the sort of powdery tannins we invariably associate with cabernet, this 100% Tempranillo reminds us why this autochthonous Iberian red grape is so versatile and so food-friendly - and so loved.

The wine's colour is like the dark lining of a Transylvanian Count's cape...
Purposefully picked and bottled a little early, thus accentuating the variety's lifted, Earl Grey Tea-like floral aromatics, this red is all about perfume and powders and cherry-blossom nosegays.
Touriga's innately bullish tannins stretch on forever in this red wine, softened and calmed by fresh, plush and perfect dark fruit flavours, tensioned and etched by fine natural acid. This balance makes the wine surprisingly and charmingly versatile with a range of cuisines. Oh, and it loves a big wine glass.
An extraordinary Touriga from the McLaren Vale that will cellar extraordinarily well but is so deliciously delicious now. Argument for delayed gratification is almost academic.

Heirloom Vineyards was conceived in vintage 2000, when a young winemaking student caught the eye of a silly old wine judge. A love story ensued inspired by two vows: To preserve the best of tradition, the old world of wine and our unique old vineyards and to champion the best clones of each variety planted in the most appropriate sites embracing the principals of organic and biodynamic farming. Seven long vintages of trial and error passed before Heirloom Vineyards could make a wine that was fine enough to pass on to future generations. That is this wine.

Hand tended vines, sorted bunch-by-bunch, naturally open fermented, basket-pressed and stored in well seasoned first-use French oak barriques from bespoke coopers.
The colour is of course, no indication of condition, being a Pinot Noir, but vibrant translucent ruby red with bright see through tinges. A striking and intriguing colour.
The aroma is suggestive of ripening cherries, and like a perfume made from ripening summer pudding fruits; raspberries, boysenberries, red-currants and even a hint of mint and mossy forest floor but overall this wine redolent with ripening plums and black cherry smells and the merest hint of enticing cedar and spice. An extraordinary range of aromatics like waves crashing on a beach.
The palate is initially intense sweet fruit of cherries and ripe raspberries, plums and then some black cherries. This is balanced by a tangy acidity, like a summer pudding with some fresh cream and spice from the French Oak and an almost chalk-like tannin structure. A real nod to Burgundy.
An extraordinary Pinot Noir from the Adelaide Hills, from Heirloom clones of course, of whole bunches (stems and all) open fermented basket pressed, unfiltered, unfined and hand-bottled from a single site of free draining quartz laden north-facing vines that cannot be poached by describing their location on this note.
