A vinous rematch of the famous 1811 BATTLE AT BARROSA RIDGE where Spain and France collided. La Résistance! takes up the fight for the traditional French varieties of the Barossa and pitches gnarly old vine GRENACHE, SYRAH & MOURVÈDRE into defence against the invading foreign marauders.
Grenache makes up 55% of this wine, delivering a Grenache-centric GSM, with elegant Syrah (33%) and spicy Mourvèdre (12%) adding tell-tale definition and structure. The majority of the Grenache is from an old cool Williamstown vineyard, on the border of the Adelaide Hills, which is blended with Grenache from a special Krondorf Road parcel.
Early harvest Syrah is from a 69 year old Ebenezer vineyard and from the Heinrich vineyard in the Lyndoch foothills, which unites with the lovely blue-fruit characters of Syrah from a small Northern Eden Valley vineyard on the outskirts of Angaston.
The remainder of the blend is powerful, spicy Mourvèdre. This is definitely a Grenache-driven GSM! Subtle seasoned oak and caramel lead to a deep-fruited, dark cherry and strawberry palate with supple fine-grain tannin. Gentle refreshing acidity gives great line and drives the brooding and delicious fruit through to a lingering finish.

Welcome to a ROSÉ REVOLUTION!
ROSÉ was once a sweet, coloured white wine - now it’s a legitimate style of its own. Lovingly crafted from REAL ROSÉ VARIETIES. Not Your Grandma’s Rosé is made as a true rosé (picked earlier than typical red wine). 62% of the blend is old vine Grenache from the Lyndoch foothills and from Stockwell, which is co-fermented with 30% of old vine Mourvèdre also from the Lyndoch region. The remaining 8% is an aromatic blend of Riesling, Gewürtztraminer, and Weißer Herold from the Northern Eden Valley, which emphasises the strawberry, musk and turkish delight aromas. Not just for summer!
Enjoy with all foods, from Spencer Gulf prawns to Saskia Beer poultry and charcuterie. Early picking allows for a textural mouthfeel, luminous rose-diamond colour and crisp natural acidity giving great length. Grenache contributes the red berry and strawberry palate with Mourvèdre adding structure and lingering spice.

Blood plum, stewed cherries, blueberries and violets dominate the evocative nose, supported by bay leaf, fennel and a hint of cedar. The complex palate features bright notes of glacé cherry, red currant and raspberry balanced by plum crumble, anise and black pepper, with the long, compelling finish showing cigar box and amaro. This cohesive wine has a beautiful mouthfeel, fine tannins and is fiendishly moreish.
Blacklight
The name Blacklight captures the key attributes of the component varieties; the contrast between the dark, brooding flavour spectrum of the Mataro, and the light, red fruit flavours of the Grenache. Also implied is the dynamic between the two. By providing a contrapuntal context, details that would otherwise be hidden are revealed.
Vineyards
Mataro
The 30 year-old Mataro vines from Stockwell in the northern Barossa were right at home in the warm, dry conditions of the short and sweet 2016 vintage. The dry growing season produced smaller berries with good concentration of flavour and colour. Some decent late season rain in early March helped extend ripening towards the deeper, darker flavours needed for the Mataro component of Blacklight.
Grenache
Most of the Grenache for the 2016 Blacklight was sourced from Williamstown at the very southern, elevated end of the Barossa. The cooler Williamstown vineyard site protected the Grenache during very warm weather in December and January, enabling the retention of bright, punchy flavours. A small portion of Grenache from Bethany was also included in Blacklight for the first time. The elevation and cooling gully breezes at the Bethany vineyard produced some stand-out Grenache in 2016.
Winemaking
Our handling of the Mataro aimed to accentuate the darker, savoury characters of the fruit. The Mataro was de-stemmed and crushed before undergoing wild ferment, where it received vigorous manual punch-downs and occasional pumpovers. The wine was basket pressed after 18 days on skins and transferred to old French Hogsheads. After spending 14 months in oak, all free-run and pressings components of the Mataro were included in Blacklight, comprising 56 per cent of the final blend. The Grenache was handled more gently in order to preserve the bright, delicate characters of this variety. A small portion of whole bunches were included in the wild ferment of the Williamstown Grenache, which also underwent a period of extended maceration before being pressed to very old American Hogsheads. The Bethany Grenache was pressed into old French oak after a short time on skins. Both Grenache components were matured in oak for 12 months.

Delicious!
Vineyards
The Grenache was sourced from an elevated vineyard near Williamstown at the southern end of the Barossa where the Valley meets the Adelaide Hills.
The cooler Williamstown site produces the bright, punchy Grenache.

A medium weight, smashable GSM, this wine has spring blossoms, raspberry, blueberry and satsuma plum, with Szechuan pepper and laksa mint on the nose. The palate has a generous heart, with plum and rhubarb crumble, cherry liqueur, apple pie, and cedar. It’s a super juicy, slurpy, ebullient exercise in deliciousness.
Rule of Thirds
A rule of composition common to photography and graphic design (and now wine), through which an aesthetic sense of order and balance is achieved.
Vineyards
The Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro vineyards were chosen because of their capacity to make unique contributions to the wine. Each vineyard has a distinct personality that helps create a sensorial experience of order and balance in the finished wine.
Grenache
The cooler climate of Williamstown in the southern Barossa combined with 30 year-old vines and sandy soil produced beautifully bright, floral, punchy Grenache. Light and ethereal, it’s ideal for providing fruit purity and prettiness. A smaller portion of the Grenache component was sourced from Bethany in the foothills of the Barossa Ranges.
Shiraz
From 20 year old vines on the valley floor near Nuriootpa, dry-grown on sandy loam. Classic Barossa intensity, but harvested early to avoid any over-ripe, stewed flavours. The Shiraz provides spice, structure and classic Barossa flavours.
Mataro
Also dry-grown 35 year-old vines, this fruit comes from a Stockwell vineyard used in some of the Valley’s best examples of the variety. Beautifully rich and savoury, the Mataro gives great plushness and structure to the blend.
Winemaking
All components were hand-harvested, sorted, then fermented separately using wild yeast. 20% of the Grenache and 10% of the Shiraz were included as whole bunches, with the remainder going through full crush. The Grenache ferments underwent a cold soak to accentuate bright characteristics, while the Shiraz and Mataro had some extended maceration to bring structure and savoury elements to the blend. Everything was pressed to small old French oak after settling in tank, except the Mataro, which went to second-use French Barriques. All components were matured for 18 months before the final blend was assembled and bottled without fining or filtration.

Grenache delivers what Pinot promises…
A celebration of the dogged stubbornness of three McLaren Vale families, who persisted with their plots of Grenache, when other implored them to turn their land to other pursuits. From very old bush vines each vineyard eighty years plus, we make a contemporary Grenache with fragrance, succulence and fine boned structure (a little like our favourite Pinots!!). Viva la Grenache!
Creation
Hand harvested from a trio of vineyards ranging from 80 to 96 years of age and situated in the higher climes of Blewitt Springs and Clarendon. Planted into deep Aeolian sand these sites express a spicy, more modestly built, and slender expression of McLaren Vale Grenache. We lightly de-stemmed 85% of the fruit to retain whole berries, including the balance as whole bunches. Ferments were started wild in traditional open fermenters, with hand plunging twice daily to wet the caps, but not so vigorous as to macerate the stalks. After 12 days on skins, we basket pressed each parcel to a mixture of old oak puncheons and a 1000 litre foudre. Maturation was undertaken on fine lees to build mid palate texture and for the reductive benefit to avoid Grenache’s predisposition to oxidation. 11 months only in old oak to allow the blend to come together and bottled young before any meaningful oak influence can be seen.
Entwined within a complex deep core of red and purple fruit aromas, violets, earth and herb tinged; the palate is pure with old-vine flesh, calming depth and purity, but kept necessarily fresh by grainy tannins and a bright line of natural acid.
Ideal serving temperature is 16 °C, we suggest you try with your local version of the food of the many homes Grenache – the various cures of black pig from Spain, the toasted wild yeast bread and smashed tomato of the Priorat, and the smoked veal sausages of the Rhone Valley. Cool cellaring between to 5 years to 8 years will be rewarded.

Creation
This vintage is lead by a parcel of 97 year old bush vine Grenache planted high in the cool climes of Clarendon, blended with a multi-clonal pick of Blewitt Springs Mataro, a parcel of our best Patritti Shiraz, and a small amount of Cinsault. All picked by hand, the Grenache, Mataro, and Shiraz, were all fermented in open vessels with a small inclusion of whole bunch, the Cinsault was 100% whole berry ferment. Ferments were worked very gently, largely by plunging only, but left on skins for longer than any of our other parcels. Basket pressed to 100% old French oak, matured separately for 10 months before assembly as a final blend and allowed another 6 months maturation to knit together before bottling.
Composition
An elegant, floral wine, showing the aromatic red fruit lift, and depth of spice from old vine Grenache and the Cinsault, buried underneath is the intense blue fruits and violets of dry grown Mataro and Shiraz. Layered and long this wine exhibits a tightly wound core of dense red berried crunchy fruit, framed by persistent sandy tannins, and bright acidity.
Consumption
Ideal serving temperature is 16 °C, please take the time to splash in a decanter for as long as you can – we love our blended wines with paprika spiced chicken, roasted hot and fast, or grilled, with Moroccan Couscous flavoured with chorizo, kale, pistachio, and preserved lemon. Cool cellaring for 5 to 10 years will be rewarded.

Imagination
Inspired by our eating adventures in San Sebastian, immersed in the timeless pinchos bars surrounded by endless morsels of deliciousness, we wanted to create a versatile ‘eating’ wine designed to grace the table. With versatility in mind, we combined spicy and fragrant Tempranillo from both Blewitt Springs and the foothills of the McLaren Range, with a selection of old vine Grenaches.
Creation
Two vineyards of Tempranillo, one cool Blewitt Springs site, and one McLaren Flat Foothills vineyard were picked both by hand, we retained 20% whole-bunch, fermented another 10% by carbonic maceration, and de-stemmed the balance to retain whole berries for traditional open ferment. With a desire to retain freshness and vibrancy and to build a wider aromatic profile on the Tempranillo, it was left to the Grenache component to provide mid palate intensity. Old vine Grenache from three blocks ranging from 80 years to 44 years of age were de-stemmed and fermented in large open vats, with daily pump overs. After basket pressing the wine was matured in a mixture of stainless steel, old French oak barriques, and to two large old oak foudres for 7 months maturation before bottling.
Composition
This wine combines bright notes of pomegranate, sarsaparilla, violets and nutmeg typical of dry grown Tempranillo, with the perfume and succulence of old vine Grenache. This medium bodied wine is pretty, juicy and deliberately moreish. A lithe and juicy wine, it errs on the blood orange, cherry, red berry spectrum supported by savoury tannins built around a fine boned structure.
Consumption
Ideal serving temperature is 16°C... Enjoy over a shared grazing meal, this food friendly versatile wine works a treat with a good selection of flavours from a platter of cured meats to, chorizo prawns to pizzas, pastas, quail and duck dishes. Cool cellaring between to 5 years to 8 years will be rewarded.

Wine Description
Deep crimson in colour this wine is bursting with aromas of ripe cherry and plum backed with an array of sweet spice and liquorice notes. Complex ripe red fruit characters amid a fleshy mid-palate core of wild berries and spice create enduring layers of flavour. Soft and velvety tannins persist the length of the palate that finishes with some savoury nuances.
Winemaking
All 3 varieties were fermented separately and then barrel matured separately until blending. To aid colour, tannin and flavour extraction most parcels were fermented warm, with temperatures reaching 32oC. The Grenache and Mourvedre parcels were macerated on skins for 10-20 days before being pressed straight to seasoned oak hogsheads and puncheons for maturation. These parcels were then barrel maturated for 16 months without racking on full press solids, then naturally clarified, blended and bottled.

Sourced from vineyards located around the perimeter of most of the entire valley! The increasing elevations of these locations brings cooler nights and impacts the grapes to enhance bright acidities and freshness with supporting but not intrusive tannin.
The benefit of sourcing from all over the valley is complexity. We get the bright fresh Asian/North African spices from the deep sands, lifted red summer fruits from the northern red clays and savoury richness from the southern loams. Climatically these sub regions are also quite distinct from each other which helps build the complexity in the wine. 2018 was pretty dry – 80% of average spring rainfall and only 50% of average summer rainfall. Warm but not excessively hot temps throughout the growing season combined with low rainfalls led to juicy, rich and concentrated reds with good structure and balance.
The wine is only just medium bodied, which, when combined with the bright acidity and the complex but fresh aromatic makes it such a refreshing and enjoyable drink that can be enjoyed with almost any food!
