Fechner Vineyard experienced near perfect ripening conditions for Gewürztraminer in January, the early start to Spring and Summer meant we picked all three varieties earlier than last year. Late January Rainfall heralded a mild February allowing the East facing Riesling and Weißer Herold block to ripen progressively whilst retaining great natural acidity.
The Fechner brothers’ applauded vineyard is unique for both its spectacular aromatics and unique varietal mix. The blend is 41% hand picked, whole bunch pressed Riesling combined with 38% Gewürztraminer given 12 hours skin contact prior to pressing and 21% Weißer Herold. The cold settled juice parcels were racked without fining prior to co-fermentation to maximise complexity.
Düfte Punkt is an aromatic paradigm-shift. A seamless single-vineyard blend of precise Riesling, spicy Gewürztraminer, and textural Weißer Herold. Striking lychee and turkish delight aromas introduce a complex palate showing lychees, mandarins, minerality and lingering powder-puff of florals.

Showcasing the cool climate elegance of the Southernmost tip of Eden Valley at Springton, this dry grown Syrah vineyard stands out each year during classification. It shows unparalleled poise and perfumed elegance quite distinct from its Barossa Valley floor neighbours whilst retaining remarkable depth of avour and structure.
From Koine greek euangélion means “GOSPEL or GOOD NEWS” (of redemption through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection). Lower yields and a warm, moderate January provided an early start to our harvest in late February. A sudden rain event in early February marked a change to unseasonably mild conditions allowing us to pick vineyards at optimal ripeness without loss of natural acidity.
Highly perfumed it shows wild forest berries & white pepper aromas and a complex palate of fresh Black Berries, peppercorns and refreshing Morello cherries fermented in a 6 tonne open fermenter with 7 days skin contact and twice daily pump-overs. Matured in shaved, seasoned (two to five year old) French oak hogsheads for 11 months.

Three old-vine sites experienced near perfect ripening conditions for Riesling in January. The early start to Spring & Summer meant we picked earlier than last year. Late January rainfall heralded a mild February allowing the Riesling to ripen progressively while retaining great natural acidity.
In physics the triple point is the thermodynamic conditions at which the solid, liquid and gaseous phases of a substance coexist in equilibrium. Our quest is for the oft-elusive triple point of riesling: precision, texture & balance. riesling from three old vine sites: Springton, flaxman valley & angaston hills. hand-picked. Whole-bunch pressed. 18 hours skins contact. Exotic aromas of Jasmine, honeysuckle and Mandarin oat alluringly from the glass and lead to a texture laden yet delicate palate evoking new season pink lady apples, mandarin with a nely textured nish of mineral bath salts with a subtle edge of refreshing quinine.

In 2015 the Ahrens family’s certified organic vineyard on the outskirts of Springton in Flaxman Valley (Eden Valley’s riesling heartland) experienced near perfect ripening conditions for riesling in January, the early start to Spring and Summer meant we picked earlier than last year. Late January rainfall heralded a mild February allowing the east facing riesling to ripen progressively whilst retaining great natural acidity. Hand picked on two dates a fortnight apart to capture both natural acidity/freshness and intensity of flavour, the fruit was then gently whole bunch pressed and fermented on solids and bottled without fining with only a minimal addition of sulphur dioxide.
Zeitpunkt - aromas of fresh first rainfall on slaty soil with jasmine white florals lead to a natural acidity tensioned palate, it’s dolomite/ Quartz mineral core adorned with a bounty of nutmeg, cardamom and cinnamon spiced apple, peach and feijoa fruits.

2018 Vintage
The 2018 growing season started off well following above average winter rainfall, but it was dry and warm after that. Owing to later veraison in the Eden Valley as opposed to the Barossa floor, the hot spell in January and February did not cause any concern to the Avon Brae vineyard and the vines took it all comfortably in their stride.
Thankfully, Mother Nature did not dish out any adverse events this year and harvest started in March with the whites, and finished on 19 April with the last of the Cabernet blocks. Yields were above average across the board, but quality was good, with Riesling a standout as usual.
2018 Eden Hall Opulence Riesling tasting
This is our first foray into making a sweet Riesling. A parcel of fruit from Block 10 was made separately and the fermentation was stopped by super chilling, retaining some residual sugar and natural acidity, resulting in a wine of low alcohol (7.1%) and 61g/L sugar.
It is pale straw in colour with a highly perfumed nose. The first sip takes you by surprise with full-on fruit sweetness, but the second reveals a balanced, generous palate dominated by Pink Lady apples and cinnamon.
An opulent wine with a lingering finish like a good apple cider, but without the bubbles! Best drunk chilled as an aperitif, or with spicy Asian foods, or at the end with desserts and cheeses – a wine for all occasions! An open bottle kept chilled can be enjoyed over a week or two without deteriorating. Ready to drink now, but will cellar well.

2015 Vintage
The 2015 growing season started well with above average early winter rains that filled the soils and dams, however it was dry from then on. Temperatures were above average in spring allowing the vines to get away to a good healthy start.
The dry weather meant that when the night time temperature dipped there were again late season frosts, but thankfully not damaging at Avon Brae. Summer was generally mild with the exception of a few days of extreme heat after New Year that were associated with the outbreak of the Sampson Flat bushfires in the Adelaide Hills on 2 January. The damaging fires burned for 7 days in the Adelaide Hills and despite some anxious days, the fires were far enough away that they had no impact on the Eden Valley.
Thirty millimetres of rain on 8 January helped quell the fires and refreshed the vines. Near perfect ripening conditions followed leading into an earlier than usual harvest. The Grüner Veltliner was first to come off, handpicked by our extended family, Riesling and Viognier were next with it all picked by the second week of March. Shiraz and Cabernet ripened at the same time this year and were harvested around Easter.
2015 was a cracking vintage in pace, yield, and above all quality and is likely to surpass the 2002 vintage in greatness.
2015 Eden Hall Cabernet Sauvignon tasting
The 2015 Eden Hall Cabernet Sauvignon comes from selected rows in Block 3 and spent 17 months in French Oak followed by more than a year in bottle prior to release. It is deep crimson in colour opening with capsicum, mint and lead pencil on the nose followed by generous cassis and black cherry on the palate. A ponderous, complex wine with dusty tannins that add length and hold the drinker's attention. Enjoy now and beyond 2033.

2017 Vintage: In stark contrast to the previous year, the 2017 growing season followed a long wet winter that replenished soil water profiles and a wet, windy September. A mild summer included regular rainfall events ensuring a long, cool ripening period. Bunch weights were increased leading to yield levels getting back to average and a harvest schedule also getting back to “normal” with Riesling coming off at the end of March and into April whilst the reds were picked in May. 2017 Eden Valley Riesling will be a stand-out and the reds aromatic and elegant as usual, but not as big.
2017 Grüner Veltliner tasting
Our third Grüner vintage from vines growing blissfully alongside their natural soulmate, Riesling (and showing some similar characters). Pale straw in colour with a savoury nose including cloves and white pepper. The palate is broad offering nectarine and white peach over citrus. A textural wine yet a pure, clean, mineral finish. Chill and drink now, but will also age gracefully

2016 Vintage
In a word, the 2016 growing season was dry! Rainfall was well below average through winter and spring and like 2015 there were many late season frosts – indeed at Avon Brae we had our latest frost in living memory on 12 December 2015. Again, like the two previous vintages, the region was devastated by a catastrophic bushfire – this time the Pinery fire burned 86,000 hectares of farming land adjacent to the Barossa from 25 November to 2 December and again the Eden Valley thankfully escaped unscathed which allowed us to lend a hand to our relatives at Freeling. December and early January were warm, but rains at the end of January and early March were god sent and along with milder weather we eventually realised ideal ripening conditions leading up to vintage.
Harvest started early with some of the Riesling on 26 February and this year the Grüner Veltliner was late, coinciding with the last of the reds coming off in early April. The yields were above average for the whites and below average for the reds, but high quality across all varieties. It seems that the Eden Valley is able to handle almost anything that nature throws it way, and still come out on top!
2016 was a cracking vintage in pace, yield, and above all quality and is likely to surpass the 2002 vintage in greatness.

Heirloom Vineyards was conceived in vintage 2000, when a young winemaking student caught the eye of a silly old wine judge. A love story ensued inspired by two vows: To preserve the best of tradition, the old world of wine and our unique old vineyards and to champion the best clones of each variety planted in the most appropriate sites embracing the principals of organic and biodynamic farming. Seven long vintages of trial and error passed before Heirloom Vineyards could make a wine that was fine enough to pass on to future generations. That is this wine.
This Heirloom Vineyards Shiraz was produced from our best Eden Valley Vineyard whose clones and viticulture embody the very best in cutting edge but old school viticulture and winemaking. Hand tended vines, sorted bunch by bunch, naturally open fermented, basket-pressed and stored in well seasoned first use French oak barriques from bespoke coopers.

This Heirloom Vineyards Riesling was made from our best Eden Valley Vineyard whose manicured old vines embody the very best in cutting edge, but old school viticulture and winemaking. Hand tended vines, sorted bunch by bunch, naturally fermented free run juice, with ambient vineyard and winery yeasts, gently tank pressed and stored on yeast lees for 9 months before bottling.
The̴ colour is bright with beautiful onomatopoeic like green straw tinges at the edges of the glass. Bright and crystal clear with little development. Let it catch the light and marvel at the sparkle.
The aroma is a fragrant and floral beauty. Hyper-intense Eden Valley Riesling smells. This Heirloom Riesling is like smelling spring in Eden Valley, flowers blossoming, especially jasmine and textbook limes and lemon rind but also with hints of gingerbread and lime cordial. Some delicious hints of classic fresh custard and toast characters seem to be emerging in the background.
This palate has that extra dimension, no just fresh and fruity but a marvellously mouth filling juicy palate; a touch of creamy mouth-feel a wonderful part of the landscape. All balanced sweet and zingy citrus but overall a pristine, elegant pure Eden Valley Riesling with flavours that fulfils and refresh. Taught acidity with washed river stone-like minerality which delves into green apples. The definition of Riesling flavour is long, ample and fine. A tight old vine expression of Eden Valley Riesling that has all the hallmarks for a long term cellar life.
An extraordinary Riesling from the Eden Valley that will cellar extraordinarily well but is so deliciously delicious now. Argument for delayed gratification is almost academic.

High on the slopes of Eden Valley, bright yellow and blue buckets squat between rows of vines. Pickers pedantically divide Riesling grapes row by row – yellow, blue, yellow, blue, yellow, blue.
Overseeing the process, tasting the grapes, stand two of Australia’s best known Riesling makers.
Clare Valley’s Jeffrey Grosset and Eden Valley’s Robert Hill-Smith work together each vintage before taking their chosen grapes – Jeffrey’s in the blue buckets and Robert’s in the yellow - and parting ways to crush and ferment the fruit at different locations.
Debate follows, as the juice is assessed and the final, final, final blend is agreed upon. Each component, nearly identical at the start, undergoes a different conversion into wine, reflecting the personal differences of both men.
Vintage Conditions
The growing season started well, with a lovely season break as the rains started to fall in autumn, followed by above average winter rains. August and spring were drier and warmer than average, giving the vines a very healthy start. An average December was followed by below average temperatures in January, with good rains falling in the second week, keeping the vines healthy and grapes ripening. Ripening conditions, flavours and natural acids were all perfect in Eden Valley this year.
Tasting Note
The final wine is green and vibrant in appearance, with aromas of zesty lemons, grapefruit and a hint of dried green herb and spice. The palate is intense and generous, with lively citrus fruit flavours and hints of talc. The wine finish is clean and dry with refreshing, almost salty acidity.
As is the case with all great Eden Valley Rieslings, mesh will age gracefully and reliably into a mature wine under the screw-cap closure.
Eden Valley
South Australia’s Eden Valley, high in the eastern ranges surrounding the Barossa Valley, averages between 400 and 600 metres in altitude. Soils are rocky grey loam and have high acidity. Winter rainfall is abundant (typically 50% more than the Barossa Valley). Temperatures are up to two degrees cooler than the Barossa Valley and the growing season longer. Cooling breezes from
the region’s gullies and hills ensure gradual ripening and maximum flavour development.

Colour – black core with red rim.
Nose – the aromas are fresh, lifted and inviting with cherries, earth, spice, lavender and subtle eucalypt, fine cedar and cream.
Palate – The palate is restrained and then unfolds with juicy cherries and spice that build to the mid palate and carry through giving great length, balanced with laser like acid and fine tannins.
Cellaring This wine will drink well 2020 – 2037.
Viticulture This block on Mengler’s Hill is approximately 4.5 kilometres to the south of Angaston in one of the highest vineyards in Eden Valley at 500m above sea level. The location benefits from clay loam soils riddled with ironstone and small amounts of quartz. A higher altitude and corresponding cooler climate offer warm days and cold nights resulting in wines of elegance that are both vibrant and spicy.
Vinification & Maturation Fermented in a small open top vessel, fermentation lasted 7 days with total time on skins was 14 days before being drained and pressed. The free run and pressings were blended and then the component earmarked for this wine was matured in 3 year old french barrique for 23 months. The wine was then fined lightly and bottled without filtration. Matured in bottle for 17 months before release.

Aromatically lifted floral notes of Jasmine flower are followed by fresh lime and lemon blossom intensity. On the palate the citrus characters of lemon and lime create a core of intense flavour supported by an enduring mineral line. Further notes of freshly cut green apple indicate a pure expression of Riesling, and one that showcases the flavours typical to Eden Valley.
Winemaking
Hand harvested, chilled to 6oC and whole bunch pressed. It was our intention to craft the finest example of an Eden Valley Riesling. The emphasis was on retaining only the purest free-run juice and fermenting it cool to savour the delicate aromas. The ferment was taken to dryness after which the wine was gently fined, filtered and bottled.

Deep inky purple in colour with crimson hues this wine displays red current and blackberry notes together with complex spicy aromas. On the palate layers of wild berry fruit character with nuances of dried herb contribute to great complexity. Long fine velvety tannins and a core strength of flavour persists through the length of the palate.
Winemaking
Hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into small 1.5 tonne open topped fermenters. Selected fermenters also had a component of whole bunches added to the destemmed berries. A pre-fermentation cool soak ensured a slow initiation to fermentation. Ferment temperatures were allowed to peak at 32oC before being cooled to 28oC for the remainder of the fermentation. Hand plunged daily allowed for a gentle extraction and helped to prolong the fermentation. After an extended period on skins the ferments were pressed to predominately new French oak hogsheads. Matured and racked only once through the 22-month maturation period provided for extended mouth-feel and wine texture development. Prior to bottling, natural clarification and stabilisation techniques were employed to ensure minimal finings and no filtration.

Z WINE (Z for Zerk) is the creation of dynamic sisters Janelle and Kristen Zerk. With over 170 years of Barossa heritage behind them they grew up together in the Barossa Valley on a vineyard that has been in the Zerk family for five generations.
The [SAUL] Riesling is sourced from vineyards in the premium Eden Valley region. Aromatic characters of citrus and gooseberry are supported by floral notes. The palate is focused with purity and minerality finishing with crisp acidity. Drink now or cellar 5-15 years.
This wine is drinking beautifully now with intense flavours full of depth and length, but will age elegantly for many years to come. We recommend serving this Riesling chilled with fresh oysters, chilli prawn skewers or cured Atlantic salmon.
