The 2016 Red label Catlin Shiraz is from a single vineyard in Macclesfield. It was picked in several parcels and fermented in several small fermenters. It was mostly crushed and destemmed with some whole bunches being added. This wine was wild fermented and spent some time on skins post ferment. It was then matured in French oak for approx 11 months. It displays great flavours of plums and raspberries. It has firm tannins with out being big and finishes with a lovely acid line. This wine is eminently drinkable now, but will continue to improve for the next five years and beyond. It displays a spectrum of tightly coiled fruit from blueberries and plums with underlying subtle spice.

This wild ferment Riesling is bone dry and displays intense lime and citrus flavour, with beautifully balanced acidity. Sourced from the dry grown Bimbadeen vineyard in the Clare Valley, the grapes were picked in early February, crushed and left to ferment naturally. With a further 5 months on yeast lees to develop complexity, the result is a polished wine with a lingering mineral weight on the palate. Perfect for a warm summer’s day.

Vintage: 2018
Grape varieties: 100 % Riesling
Region: Clare Valley , Australia
Winemaker: Darryl Catlin
Closure: Stelvin
Alcohol (ABV): 12%
Acidity: 7.46  g/l
Residual Sugar: 1.76  g/l
Wine pH: 2.91

The dry grown grapes where picked and pressed with no additions and  free run juice was taken (no pressings used) and no sulphur was added at any stage during this whole process. This would allow the grapes to drop any phenolic flavours. The juice was then let to naturally ferment with no yeast being added over a 4 week period at around 14 degrees. It fermented to dryness over this period and no malolactic fermentation took place. Minimal sulphur was added and the wine was then left to sit on its yeast lees to develop mid palate weight for 4  months. This developed complexity and weight.

After this period, the wine was filtered to the bottling line.

The Harvester is named after Harvey the winery and vineyard dog. He comes up to the winery most days and has a life that would be the envy of most dogs.

The 2016 Harvester Shiraz comes from the Bimbadeen Vineyard in Clare. It is a rich style that oozes juicy fruit and firm tannins. The Shiraz was wild fermented with natural yeast, left on skins post ferment and then gently pressed to French oak to mature for approx 10 months. It shows some spice and dark fruits that continue through the wine.

It really is like a sport sometimes.  Making specialised wines does take a fair bit of practice, the right gear, a game plan, buckets of luck and often the desire to travel and challenge thy neighbour on their patch, with their rules and their foreign conditions....... the dreaded 'Away Game'!

Who said we can't do what they do really well?

A dramatic bouquet with raspberry, lavender, dried redcurrant and potpourri, jostling for position with mace, cumin, and coriander seed. The silky, rich palate opens with a burst of juicy berries and finishes spicy. Blueberry, blackberry and blackcurrant yield to anise and mocha, with spices loitering around all the while. A wonderfully slurpy entry resolves to a precise, grippy finish. Yum.

Tessera

A Tessera (plural Tesserae) is one of the small pieces of stone, glass or ceramic that comprises a mosaic. Tesserae are anonymous fractions of a design, and once disassembled, a mosaic cannot be reassembled on the basis of the form of its individual pieces. Malbec – the ‘black wine of Cahors’ – has spent much of its life as a small piece in more famous blends, including Bordeaux. Here though, the drama and beauty of the Tessera shines on its own.

Vineyard

Malbec has a chequered past in Australia, although Clare is one of the few places with a reputation for producing wonderfully dark Malbec bursting with brambly fruit, alluring violet perfume and firm, grippy tannin. The Malbec for the 2018 Tessera from Armagh is no exception. Located 4km northwest of the Clare township, the undulating Armagh vineyard sits on red-grey loam at an elevation of 400m. Solid rainfall in late January and early February together with generally mild conditions through to the end of Summer underscored the quality of the 2016 Clare vintage, including our Armagh Malbec.

Winemaking

The Malbec was hand-harvested in mid-March, bunch sorted, then divided into 2 treatments for vinification using wild yeast. 20% of the Malbec was subjected to carbonic maceration, spending 4 weeks in a small closed fermenter. For the other 80%, a small portion of whole bunches were included in a warm ferment that had 7 days of extended maceration. Both treatments were basket pressed, settled in tank, then transferred to small, fourth-use French oak barrels. The wine was matured for 16 months before the final blend was assembled, then bottled without fining or filtration.

No where to hide…

Of all the many grape varieties, Riesling is the most transparent expression of a vineyard site.  We have long loved the more crystalline expressions of Clare Valley Riesling, which embrace the exquisite risk inherent in delicacy and fragility. Never a wine about winemaker ego, or manhandling in the winery, just purity…

Please handle gently.

Creation
Approximately 50% of the fruit for this wine comes from the hungry rocky soils shared by two high altitude vineyards in the rugged Hills of Penwortham and Sevenhill. The resulting bunches and berries are tiny, but intense. They ripen late in the season but throw a rapier lean acid line. To provide balance, the remaining 50% is sourced from a slightly more fertile northfacing patch in Watervale planted in the 1960’s on red loam over quartz providing more generosity, weight and flavour.

Composition

A deliberately delicate expression of Clare Valley Riesling, exhibiting lifted floral notes, kaffir lime, freshly squeezed lemon juice, grapefruit peel, bath salts, and underlying talc. Classic citrus notes are complimented by the mouth-watering chalky and mineral texture on the palate, finishing with a fine and taut acid line.

Consumption

Ideal serving temperature is 10 °C, drink with pristine South Australian oysters - freshly shucked - served natural (or with a splash of rizza for flavour). Also suited to cellar for up to 10 years for a more complex and intriguing Riesling expression..

Bottled: June 2018

Refined, elegant and super-stylish. Limited release, single vineyard and organically grown.

Tasting Notes

Classic cabernet colour – deep and dark.

Also intense is the aroma: black currant, leaf and stylish oak. Concentrated black and red berry fruits are wrapped around vibrant tannins, and supported by really smart oak integration. A hedonistic wine with a generosity of fruit that belies great depth and length. Has a big future ahead yet drinks brilliantly now with a juicy beef steak.

Keep to 15 years if you wish.

Less new oak is used to maintain its juicy palate.

Tasting Notes

Bright red with lifted, generous red berry fruits.

Bursting with cherry and other red berries, lively spice and a crisp, tangy edge. So fresh and zippy, with typical ‘Italian’ minerality, gentle but firm tannins and long-lasting fruitiness on the palate.

Dangerously more-ish. Enjoy now to five to eight years.

Youthful lime green which will develop in time. Delicate spring blossom and lime leaf with a hint of vanillinspice.
Crunchy green-apple and crisp, vibrant distinctive lemon-lime citrus flavours abound, at once juicy andtangy.
Almost ethereally light and elegant; its minerality wafting along the palate to a long, pleasing close. Impressively delicious and worthy of at least a few years cellaring, if not more than a decade.

Tasting Notes

Very pale white gold.
Dried wildflower and lightly stewed apple over nuanced spicy oak. Crisp, lightly savoury, lemony Semillon with texture and length. Layered and flavoursome yet relatively light and bright for what is a wood-aged white, the pristine fruit shining through on the finish, balanced by chalky acidity. Sips nicely on its own but truly shines with grilled white fish or poultry.
Worth cellaring through to 2028.

Deep crimson-purple with youthful edge.

Pretty red fruits with vanillin spice –  more restrained and stylish, compared to the 2015 Blueberry & spice, velvet textured, vibrant fruit cloaked in classy oak.
This is succulent and juicy, generously flavoured and with mouth puckering fine tannins. Stylish new world shiraz that stands out for its appealing mid-weight texture – refreshing in our world of big-boned beefy Australian reds.

Cellar for 15 years with ease but fabulous now with Moroccan lamb.

Almost impossibly lavish, the 2012 Venus and Mars Shiraz stretches credulity to breaking point vis à vis how much flavour one can actually get into a wine.
With a nose that has a monumental perfume to it (try it, and you'll see what we mean) of roasted blackcurrants, more blackcurrants and the aroma that you get when you coat a ham with brown sugar, stud it with cloves and bake it, this wine is entirely built for pleasure.

After more than four years in barrel (and it needed it, it really did, to tame it) it has utterly absorbed its (40%) new oak and is chock full of wonderfully fresh and vibrant purple and black fruit, with the whole cut through, balanced and made more complex by warming spice and rounded tannins. Absolutely a catholic wine, it'd appal any good puritan.

285 dozen and 100 (individually numbered) magnums bottled.

Vineyard: Watervale
Altitude: 430 metres
Harvested: 29th March
Vinification: Whole berries, natural yeast, 18 days maceration, pressed to oak, aged on lees, no racking, no fining, no filtration.

A single vineyard wine sourced from our cooler Skilly Valley vineyard in the foothills of Mount Oakden, and made in a cooler more linear Gris style.

Pale straw in colour with brilliant clarity and some residual youthful green tints. Hints of the grey (Gris) trademark colours starting to poke through.

Fresh and instantly recognised on the nose, the flavours of green apples, Japanese pear and kitchen spices rise up in the glass.

The flavours present on the nose carry forward well onto the palate, the apple and pear characters swirl around the mouth with the slight veneer of 2.9 grams per litre of retained grape sugar and complimentary natural acidity a signature of this Alsatian inspired wine.

Alc : 12.5% v/v

Cellaring Potential
Can be cellared for a further 3 – 5 years but drinking beautifully now.

A modern take on the classic Rhone inspired blend; the 90% old vine Grenache providing the freshness, delicacy and focus whilst the 5% Shiraz and 5% Mataro adding texture, structure and spice.

Bright red in colour with some crimson tints and brilliant appearance.

Lifted red fruit nose, full of the aromas of cherries, summer plums, savoury spices and just a hint of seasoned French oak char.

Lighter, medium weighted wine brimming with freshness in an easy drinking style. The cherry and red berry flavours perfectly in sync with the powdery tannins and natural acidity, the spices of the Mataro carrying the palate even further forward.

Alc : 14.5% v/v

Cellaring potential: of at least 6 – 8 years

Hints of tropical fruits are also present in a wine brimming full of character and regional flavour.

A wine that will benefit from at least 20 more years in the cellar.
