*A vinous rematch of the famous 1811 BATTLE AT BARROSA RIDGE where Spain and France collided. La Conquista! pitches TEMPRANILLO, GARNACHA & GRACIANO on the attack against the Barossa Old Guard French varieties.

Tempranillo parcels from Gomersal on the Western ridge and Williamstown in the Barossa’s southern hills were individually matured for seven months, in seasoned american and french puncheons and Hogsheads, then blended with garnacha from 50 year old vines in the Lyndoch foothills picked late february, giving the ripe juicy fruit needed to flesh out the structure of Tempranillo’s complex and savoury fruit.

The final Blend is 63% Tempranillo and 19% old vine Garnacha and 18% Graciano. Cherry and Cola aromas mingle with hints of chocolate and spicy florals. A dark yet luminous crimson colour hints at the rich semi-savoury dark cherry and cola palate that finishes with a hint of grenache red cherry juiciness.

A vinous rematch of the famous 1811 BATTLE AT BARROSA RIDGE where Spain and France collided. La Résistance! takes up the fight for the traditional French varieties of the Barossa and pitches gnarly old vine GRENACHE, SYRAH & MOURVÈDRE into defence against the invading foreign marauders.

Grenache makes up 55% of this wine, delivering a Grenache-centric GSM, with elegant Syrah (33%) and spicy Mourvèdre (12%) adding tell-tale definition and structure. The majority of the Grenache is from an old cool Williamstown vineyard, on the border of the Adelaide Hills, which is blended with Grenache from a special Krondorf Road parcel.

Early harvest Syrah is from a 69 year old Ebenezer vineyard and from the Heinrich vineyard in the Lyndoch foothills, which unites with the lovely blue-fruit characters of Syrah from a small Northern Eden Valley vineyard on the outskirts of Angaston.

The remainder of the blend is powerful, spicy Mourvèdre. This is definitely a Grenache-driven GSM! Subtle seasoned oak and caramel lead to a deep-fruited, dark cherry and strawberry palate with supple fine-grain tannin. Gentle refreshing acidity gives great line and drives the brooding and delicious fruit through to a lingering finish.

Welcome to a ROSÉ REVOLUTION!

ROSÉ was once a sweet, coloured white wine - now it’s a legitimate style of its own. Lovingly crafted from REAL ROSÉ VARIETIES. Not Your Grandma’s Rosé is made as a true rosé (picked earlier than typical red wine). 62% of the blend is old vine Grenache from the Lyndoch foothills and from Stockwell, which is co-fermented with 30% of old vine Mourvèdre also from the Lyndoch region. The remaining 8% is an aromatic blend of Riesling, Gewürtztraminer, and Weißer Herold from the Northern Eden Valley, which emphasises the strawberry, musk and turkish delight aromas. Not just for summer!

Enjoy with all foods, from Spencer Gulf prawns to Saskia Beer poultry and charcuterie. Early picking allows for a textural mouthfeel, luminous rose-diamond colour and crisp natural acidity giving great length. Grenache contributes the red berry and strawberry palate with Mourvèdre adding structure and lingering spice.

A celebration of the INTENSITY of Shiraz and the LAYERED STRUCTURE of Cabernet Sauvignon. Great depth of fruit is complemented by the judicious use of fine-grained oak. The backbone (68%) of the blend came from the blue-chip Ehrat vineyard on Krondorf Road, where dry-grown Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grow side-by-side. The remainder of the blend is Shiraz from Northern Eden Valley and two Shiraz vinyards from Light Pass and Stockwell.

The resulting blend is textured and multidimensional. Structured Krondorf Shiraz contributes rich plum and strawberry red fruits while the Cabernet offers inky black berry fruit and cassis.

A contemporary archetype that demonstrates a FINER STYLE of Barossa Shiraz, showing pure SUBLIME FRUIT EXPRESSION with fine oak playing a supporting role. An incredibly dry winter and spring set the scene for one of the earliest vintage starts in living memory. Perfect ripening conditions in January and February make for another exceptional Barossa Shiraz year.

A careful selection of established low yielding vineyards stretching from the North Barossa townships of Ebenezer and Light Pass through to Lyndoch in Southern Barossa. Matured in new and seasoned French and American oak allowing the vibrant mid-palate of dark and light fruit to come to the fore. Deep crimson/purple in colour with a nose of cedar, spice and plum hinting at the mix of dark fruits and chocolate lurking on the rich structured palate. The wine shows powerful depth of flavour with plush lingering mouthfeel.

2016 Vintage
In a word, the 2016 growing season was dry! Rainfall was well below average through winter and spring and like 2015 there were many late season frosts – indeed at Avon Brae we had our latest frost in living memory on 12 December 2015. Again, like the two previous vintages, the region was devastated by a catastrophic bushfire – this time the Pinery fire burned 86,000 hectares of farming land adjacent to the Barossa from 25 November to 2 December and again the Eden Valley thankfully escaped unscathed which allowed us to lend a hand to our relatives at Freeling. December and early January were warm, but rains at the end of January and early March were god sent and along with milder weather we eventually realised ideal ripening conditions leading up to vintage.

Harvest started early with some of the Riesling on 26 February and this year the Grüner Veltliner was late, coinciding with the last of the reds coming off in early April. The yields were above average for the whites and below average for the reds, but high quality across all varieties. It seems that the Eden Valley is able to handle almost anything that nature throws it way, and still come out on top!

2016 was a cracking vintage in pace, yield, and above all quality and is likely to surpass the 2002 vintage in greatness.

2016 Eden Hall Cabernet Sauvignon tasting
The 2016 Eden Hall Springton Cabernet Sauvignon is deep crimson-red, with liquorice and mint on the nose. The palate is filled with ripe rich black fruit finishing with mouth-filling dusty tannins. An approachable drink-now interpretation of the noble Cabernet Sauvignon.

2017 Vintage
In stark contrast to the previous year, the 2017 growing season followed a long wet winter that replenished soil water profiles and a wet, windy September. A mild summer included regular rainfall events ensuring a long, cool ripening period. Bunch weights were increased leading to yield levels getting back to average and a harvest schedule also getting back to “normal” with Riesling coming off at the end of March and into April whilst the reds were picked in May.

The 2017 Eden Hall Springton Shiraz is crimson-red, with liquorice and spice on the nose. Juicy dark fruits on the palate with a savoury finish. A lip smacking wine, ready to drink now or cellar with confidence.

Blood plum, stewed cherries, blueberries and violets dominate the evocative nose, supported by bay leaf, fennel and a hint of cedar. The complex palate features bright notes of glacé cherry, red currant and raspberry balanced by plum crumble, anise and black pepper, with the long, compelling finish showing cigar box and amaro. This cohesive wine has a beautiful mouthfeel, fine tannins and is fiendishly moreish.

Blacklight

The name Blacklight captures the key attributes of the component varieties; the contrast between the dark, brooding flavour spectrum of the Mataro, and the light, red fruit flavours of the Grenache. Also implied is the dynamic between the two. By providing a contrapuntal context, details that would otherwise be hidden are revealed.

Vineyards

Mataro

The 30 year-old Mataro vines from Stockwell in the northern Barossa were right at home in the warm, dry conditions of the short and sweet 2016 vintage. The dry growing season produced smaller berries with good concentration of flavour and colour. Some decent late season rain in early March helped extend ripening towards the deeper, darker flavours needed for the Mataro component of Blacklight.

Grenache

Most of the Grenache for the 2016 Blacklight was sourced from Williamstown at the very southern, elevated end of the Barossa. The cooler Williamstown vineyard site protected the Grenache during very warm weather in December and January, enabling the retention of bright, punchy flavours. A small portion of Grenache from Bethany was also included in Blacklight for the first time. The elevation and cooling gully breezes at the Bethany vineyard produced some stand-out Grenache in 2016.

Winemaking

Our handling of the Mataro aimed to accentuate the darker, savoury characters of the fruit. The Mataro was de-stemmed and crushed before undergoing wild ferment, where it received vigorous manual punch-downs and occasional pumpovers. The wine was basket pressed after 18 days on skins and transferred to old French Hogsheads. After spending 14 months in oak, all free-run and pressings components of the Mataro were included in Blacklight, comprising 56 per cent of the final blend. The Grenache was handled more gently in order to preserve the bright, delicate characters of this variety. A small portion of whole bunches were included in the wild ferment of the Williamstown Grenache, which also underwent a period of extended maceration before being pressed to very old American Hogsheads. The Bethany Grenache was pressed into old French oak after a short time on skins. Both Grenache components were matured in oak for 12 months.

A light, moreish wine that captures the best flavours of young, vibrant Grenache and sets them against an intricate backdrop of dried herbs and spices. Upon entering the mouth Serotina is all about pure, pristine fruit flavours, but there are darker, spicier things in the shadows that take hold and carry the captivating finish. The buoyant nose is highlighted by cherry compote, red liquorice and Satsuma plum together with hints of dried herbs and potpourri. The bright, focused entry opens to a soft, slinky palate yielding red currant, cherry bon bon, dried cumquat, plum, and white pepper. Delicious.

Serotina

Meaning at the end of the day, the time that bats fly. Also an attractive e flower and a type of cherry. So many wine connotations. From the Latin Serotinus, but in the feminine voice (for 100 pretentiousness points).

Vineyards

Grenache

Two-thirds of the Grenache was sourced from an elevated vineyard near Williamstown at the southern end of the Barossa where the Valley meets the Adelaide Hills. The cooler Williamstown site produces the bright, punchy Grenache that forms the core of Serotina. The rest of the Grenache is from a warmer Bethany vineyard growingGrenache with darker characters. Together, the Grenache vineyards comprise almost 70 percent of Serotina.

Cinsault & Shiraz

Around one-quarter of the Sertotina is Cinsault from a Bethany vineyard not far from the Grenache. Here the sandy soil and slight elevation above the Valley floor produces soft Cinsault with a beautiful bouquet. A splash of Shiraz comes from Murray Street near Greenock in the northwest of the Barossa. The Shiraz grows on a warmer site below 280m on hard, red-brown soil, helping to create wine with lovely texture and dark red fruit flavours.

Winemaking

All grapes were hand-harvested, with the Bethany Grenache, Cinsault and Shiraz arriving around late March, followed by the Williamstown Grenache, which was harvested in late April. The Bethany Grenache was destemmed and crushed before a short cold soak and long, cooler ferment. There were 3 different treatments for the Willy Grenache: around half was destemmed and crushed; one-quarter was sealed in a closed fermenter for carbonic maceration; and the remainder was set aside for a cool ferment that included 30 percent whole bunches. Both the Cinsault and Shiraz were destemmed and crushed, with the Cinsault pressed early after 5 days on skins The Shiraz had an 8 day ferment and 8 days of extended maceration. All ferments used wild yeast, and were basket pressed to tank for settling before being gravity transferred to barrels. Small, old French oak was used for maturation. The Willy Grenache spent 8 months in oak, while the rest had an extra month. The wine was blended and bottled in early January without fining or filtration.

A medium weight, smashable GSM, this wine has spring blossoms, raspberry, blueberry and satsuma plum, with Szechuan pepper and laksa mint on the nose. The palate has a generous heart, with plum and rhubarb crumble, cherry liqueur, apple pie, and cedar. It’s a super juicy, slurpy, ebullient exercise in deliciousness.

Rule of Thirds

A rule of composition common to photography and graphic design (and now wine), through which an aesthetic sense of order and balance is achieved.

Vineyards

The Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro vineyards were chosen because of their capacity to make unique contributions to the wine. Each vineyard has a distinct personality that helps create a sensorial experience of order and balance in the finished wine.

Grenache

The cooler climate of Williamstown in the southern Barossa combined with 30 year-old vines and sandy soil produced beautifully bright, floral, punchy Grenache. Light and ethereal, it’s ideal for providing fruit purity and prettiness. A smaller portion of the Grenache component was sourced from Bethany in the foothills of the Barossa Ranges.

Shiraz

From 20 year old vines on the valley floor near Nuriootpa, dry-grown on sandy loam. Classic Barossa intensity, but harvested early to avoid any over-ripe, stewed flavours. The Shiraz provides spice, structure and classic Barossa flavours.

Mataro

Also dry-grown 35 year-old vines, this fruit comes from a Stockwell vineyard used in some of the Valley’s best examples of the variety. Beautifully rich and savoury, the Mataro gives great plushness and structure to the blend.

Winemaking

All components were hand-harvested, sorted, then fermented separately using wild yeast. 20% of the Grenache and 10% of the Shiraz were included as whole bunches, with the remainder going through full crush. The Grenache ferments underwent a cold soak to accentuate bright characteristics, while the Shiraz and Mataro had some extended maceration to bring structure and savoury elements to the blend. Everything was pressed to small old French oak after settling in tank, except the Mataro, which went to second-use French Barriques. All components were matured for 18 months before the final blend was assembled and bottled without fining or filtration.

This Heirloom Vineyards Shiraz was produced from our best Barossa Shiraz Vineyard whose clones and viticulture embody the very best in cutting edge but old school viticulture and winemaking. Hand tended vines, sorted bunch-by-bunch, naturally open fermented, basket pressed and stored in French oak barriques from bespoke coopers.

This wine has an intense bright purple hue and an inkier royal red carpet colour closer to the center of the glass.

The aroma is an astonishing and lifted brace of blackberries, spice and even a perfume like touch of blueberries. Pure fruit and spice that is not in any way overwhelmed by winemaking artifact. The wine has a concentration of aromas that come from not over-ripe fruits. The smells change quickly in the glass and are fascinating to follow but the mouth beckons.

There is quite a remarkable entry to the palate. A seamless soft but structured shiraz, lots of blackberries again for sure but also a mid-palate dark chocolate spice that whooshes through the mouth that you want to slow it down and check it out. There is some cream and spice from the French Oak and an almost chalk like tannin structure but it's all about the pure fruit.

An extraordinary Shiraz from the Barossa that will cellar well - 10, 20, 30+ or more years, but is so deliciously perfect now any argument for delayed gratification is almost academic.

REGION: Barossa

VARIETIES: Annexus Grenache was sourced from two very old low yielding Barossa Vineyards, one ancestor vineyard over 150 years old and the other old vines from the Northern Barossa Valley.

WINEMAKING: Fermentation in small open top fermenters incorporating a small amount of whole bunches.

OAK MATURATION: 100% barrel maturated for 12 months, in older French oak hogsheads (300 litre barrels).

TECHNICAL NOTES:
Alcohol 14.0%
pH 3.48
TA 6.1 g/l

STYLE: The inspiration from the Barossa’s best old vine Grenache vineyards created Annexus, an addition to our Plexus blend. Annexus is a small unique blend selected from our best old low yielding Grenache vineyards, made only in the best years.

VINTAGE: The 2017 vintage started with a warmer than usual spring followed by early, but even, flowering and fruit-set. Frost, particularly in the Northern Barossa reduced yields however the conditions during fruit ripening were pleasingly mild and dry with rain in mid-January bringing some welcome relief. Grenache was picked on 16th from the Northern Barossa and the 25th of March from Eden Valley.

TASTING:

Colour: Bright purple red.

Nose: Vibrant red fruit aromatics complexed by red roses and savoury spice.

Palate: Fine and long, delicate yet carrying impressive purity and flavour intensity. An array of ripe red fruits, dark cherry and raspberry fill the palate finishing with hints of clove, dusty earth and velvety tannins

REGION: Barossa

VARIETIES: Shiraz 100%. Eligo represents the best of my 2017 vintage and is sourced from some excellent Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley regions.

WINEMAKING: Fermentation with submerged cap in small stainless steel fermenters. Some batches had up to 2 weeks on skins.

OAK MATURATION: 100% barrel matured for 20 months with 60% new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300 litre) and the balance 2 and 3 year old hogsheads.

TECHNICAL NOTES:
Alcohol 14.5%
pH 3.54
TA 6.40 g/l

STYLE: My aim with Eligo is to produce a structured but elegant expression of Barossa Shiraz. A wine with restrained power, rich texture and palate length. Eligo is a vineyard selection of the best, low yielding parcels of exceptional fruit that I find during the vintage.

VINTAGE: After good winter and early spring rains the soil profiles were generally full, but a combination of a windy spring with northern Barossa frosts did dramatically reduce the production for some vineyards. A dry late spring and hot start to summer was brought to a halt on Valentine’s day by significant rain and then cooler conditions for the remainder of vintage. These cooler conditions provided an extended ripening period and allowed excellent flavour to build.

Tasting:

Colour: Deep purple red.

Nose: Lifted black plum, blackberry and blueberry with hints of earth, anise and spicy, savoury oak.

Palate: Elegant expression of rich dark fruits with some earthy savouriness and smoked meat flavours. Long and intense with excellent fruit purity and freshness, finishing with a taut backbone and persistent fine tannin structure.

REGION: Barossa

VARIETIES: Shiraz 100%, sourced from old vineyards in the Krondorf, Eden Valley Light Pass and Ebenezer regions.

WINEMAKING: Fermentation with submerged cap and small open stainless steel fermenters.

OAK MATURATION: 100% barrel matured for 15 months, with 35% new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300 litres) and the balance in 2, 3 and 4 year old hogsheads.

TECHNICAL NOTES:
Alcohol 14.5%
pH 3.51
TA 6.30 g/l

STYLE: My aim with Entity is to produce an elegant Shiraz true to the Barossa. The 2016 Entity again includes Eden Valley Shiraz to help maintain the elegance and style of Entity. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques were employed with Entity, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and fruit depth to allow great potential for improvement in the bottle under good cellaring conditions, for at least 10- 12 years.

VINTAGE: The 2016 vintage started with a warmer than usual spring followed by early, but even, flowering and fruit-set. Frost, particularly in the Northern Barossa reduced yields however the conditions during fruit ripening were pleasingly mild and dry with rain in mid-January brining some welcome relief. Shiraz was first picked in the Krondorf area on 12 February and finished on 17 March in Eden Valley.

TASTING:

Colour: Deep purple red.

Nose: Lifted notes of violets, dark berries and plum, enhanced by cocoa powder and savoury, spicy French oak.

Palate: Rich yet tightly packed with an array of concentrated dark fruits. The layered fruit is supported by enlivening acidity and fine, very long tannins which will enable ample cellaring potential.

REGION: Barossa

VARIETIES: Marsanne 50%, Roussanne 42% Viognier 8%

Marsanne was sourced from the Marananga region, Roussanne from the Kalimna region and Viognier from Eden Valley.

WINEMAKING: Gentle pressings were combined with free run juice and cold settled.

Fermentation commenced in stainless steel but some of the Marsanne and Viognier finished fermentation in and was aged in barrel until bottled in late August. The remaining Marsanne and the Roussanne was aged on lees in tank until bottling, to enhance the structure and texture of the wine.

OAK MATURATION: 50% aged in fine grain French oak (with only 10% new oak) for 6 months

TECHNICAL NOTES:
Alcohol 12.5%
pH 3.29
TA 5.58g/l

STYLE: My aim with Plexus MVR is to promote a vibrant expression of fruit aromas from the interaction of the three varieties; and on the palate, to build structure and texture, rather than just acid crispness.

VINTAGE: The growing season was characterised by low winter and spring rainfall, which was followed by a hot spell in mid-December. The warm weather continued through January, and was thankfully broken by almost 40mm of rain in late January early February. The timing of this rain was perfect, particularly for a lot of our dry grown vines. Following the rain, the balance of the ripening season comprised warm days, but slightly cooler than average night temperatures, helping the vines to cope with the warm conditions. This February weather was fantastic with Marsanne harvested on Monday 8 February closely followed by Roussanne and Viognier later in March.

TASTING:

Colour: Attractive pale straw

Nose: Aromas of stone fruits, honeysuckle and dried apricot.

Palate: Medium bodied with good texture, dry finish and balanced acidity. Flavours of nectarine, mandarin and pear make for good food pairings with seafood and white meats.

Vintage Conditions
Good Winter rains resulted in 20% higher than average rainfall which charged up the soil moisture reserves. Warmer Spring temperatures ensured vines got the healthy start to the growing season they required. Very little rain fell during December and the first few weeks in January. However mid-January we saw 30mm of rain fall at the perfect time to ensure healthy vine and grape ripening. Near perfect growing conditions continued for the rest of the season producing small berries resulting in great colour and varietal flavour.

Vineyard Selection T
The Hatchling Shiraz sourced from several blocks within the Schubert Estate vineyard located in the sub-region of Marananga in the Barossa Valley.

Winemaking
The Shiraz grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and fermented (EC1118 yeast) in 5 tonne open top fermenters with twice daily pump-overs to achieve maximum extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. At the completion of fermentation, the wine is basket pressed with freerun and pressings wine combined and filled to neutral French oak 225L barriques for a maturation period of 18 months before careful barrel selection and blending before bottling. The wine is neither fined, nor filtered. Tasting Evaluation

Colour
Garnet, deep core with a brick red rim.

Aroma
Concentrated notes of black plum, blackberry conserve and Christmas cake, complimented with subtle spicy cedar oak tones and tobacco leaf aromas.

Palate
Fruit forward flavours of plums, blueberry, cocoa powder wash across the surfaces of the mouth. Dusty savoury oak derived tannins encompass the dense fruit core. Alcohol warmth extends the olfactory experience.

Now with over 12 months bottle age, this wine is ready to drink now or further cellar for future enjoyment anytime over the next decade.

Tasting Notes

Colour – black core with deep red rim.

Nose – is full of dark fruits and spice with fresh charcuterie, graphite, subtle earth and peppery

Palate – the most restrained of the Barossa Valley trio, the 2013 Moppa exhibits a backbone of fresh and juicy dark fruits with subtle spice and earth notes that carry through to the late palate, balanced with fine savoury tannins giving a long seamless finish.

Cellaring Drink now to 2030 if cellared well.

Viticulture Situated on the south eastern slope of Mt Moppa, vineyard is at an altitude of approximately 400m above sea level, and a soil profile of deep red/ brown loam, mottled with quartz and ironstone fragments. The rows run north-south, and the combined elevation and southerly aspect contribute to the softness and spiciness of this Shiraz, with Moppa being the most elegant and restrained of the 3 wines.

GREENOCK 2013 BAROSSA VALLEY SHIRAZ

Magic Dirt has been inspired by the various sub regions’ terroir of South Australia’s Barossa Valley. After several years of trials, we originally chose three subregions that show profound differences, but still reflect the true qualities of great Barossa Valley Shiraz. All vineyards selected are trellised with a single cordon, single catch wire, and planted with the clone 1654. In 2012 the range was extended with a wine from a vineyard on Mengler’s Hill in Eden Valley and in 2013 a fifth wine was included from Willunga in McLaren Vale. The philos- ophy has remained the same...the barrel selected truly showcases the vineyard it is from and not every subregion is selected every year if the representation is not seen.

Tasting Notes
Colour – black core with deep red rim.

Nose – The richest and fullest of the Barossa Valley vineyards, the aromas are fresh and lifted with black and purple fruits, meaty notes, graphite, earth and spice.

Palate
This wine explodes with a fresh and juicy entry of dark fruits, chocolate and earth which carry through the palate and then fine spicy tannins pull everything together to a long seamless finish.

Cellaring
There is a lot going on here and as a result, I feel that this wine will drink well 2016 – 2035.

Viticulture
Centrally located this vineyard is 2.4 kilometres south west of Moppa, and 4.5 kilometres north of Stonewell. It is planted in classic red brown earth, with rich loam over heavy red clay. This soil encourages phenolic development and the north-south orientation, with a southerly aspect reduces exposure resulting in richness of flavour and good tannins.

Vinification & Maturation
Fermented in a 2t open top vessel, fermentation lasted 10 days with total time on skins of 17 days before being drained and pressed. The free run and pressings were blended and then the component earmarked for this wine was matured in 3 year old French barrique for 23 months. The wine was then fined lightly and bottled without filtration. Matured in bottle for 17 months before release.

Wine Description

Dark inky in colour this wine bursts out of the glass with ripe berry compote, underpinned by lifted violets and subtle dried herb aromas. The palate is modern, fresh and lively displaying a rich mid-palate complexity. From an outstanding Barossa vintage, the wine is approachable now but will mature well for many more years.

Winemaking

The basis of this wine comes from the Marschall Family vineyards, located in the Tanunda and Ebenezer districts of the Barossa Valley. The Tanunda vineyard grown on a sandy soil profile typically provides a focused aromatic lift while the rich iron clad soils of Ebenezer add a dense fruit core and structure to the final wine.

A variety of fermentation techniques were utilized, but all involved extended skin contact ranging from 15 to 25 days. A cold soak period of up 7 days occurred before a natural warming to start the fermentation. Upon completion the ferments were pressed to a mix of new and seasoned oak hogsheads, for malolatic fermentation and maturation. Matured in barrel with minimal intervention for 18 months, then naturally clarified, and bottled with minimal filtration.

Wine Description

Deep crimson in colour with a complex aroma of dark cherry, plums and ripe cocoa beans. The palate is powerful and well structured, fleshy, with lashings of flavour finishing slick and focused.

Winemaking

Hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into small 1.5 tonne open topped fermenters. The fruit was chilled for 6 days before being allowed to naturally warm up to start fermentation. To optimise the vineyard expression a range of hand plunging cap management techniques were used across the different vineyard parcels. Post-pressing, the wines were transferred to a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak hogsheads. Matured for 20 months in oak without racking, the wines were then carefully blended. The blended wine was then naturally clarified and bottled with minimal filtration.

Wine Description
Deep ruby red colour with intense dark cherry, plum fruits and complex dried
herbs. On the palate a fleshy black-fruit core is surrounded by a layered line of
grainy and savoury tannins.

Winemaking
The Tempranillo is grown in the Light Pass sub-region of the Barossa Valley,
which is classic red soil over limestone, and sits high on the eastern edge of the
Valley. Likely, the oldest planting of Tempranillo in the region, planted in 1999
and is managed with low-input sustainable viticultural practices.
The fruit was handpicked, destemmed and fermented in a mix of small
fermenters, both stainless steel and oak. Extended skin contact pre and post
fermentation together with daily hand plunging was utilised to assist in retaining
fruit character and building tannin structure.
The ferments were pressed to a mix of new and seasoned 500 litres French oak
vessels. Matured undisturbed for 30 months, then naturally clarified and bottled
with minimal filtration.

Wine Description

Deep in colour with a rich and lifted bouquet of wild berry fruits complimented with dried herb nuances. On the palate layers of ripe red fruits and wild berry characters marry seamlessly with subtle dried herb and spicy notes. Silky tannins persist the length of the palate.

Winemaking

This wine is a blend of individual Shiraz parcels made from unique sites throughout the Barossa. The blend of cooler climate Eden Valley Shiraz (39%) and warmer climate Barossa Valley Shiraz (61%), combine beautifully to enhance the palate structure and aromatics.

A variety of fermentation techniques were utilised all involving extended skin contact and daily plunging, which gently extracted tannin and built structure. To add complexity some batch components utilised indigenous yeast while others involved varying levels of whole-bunch fermentation. The ferments were pressed to a mix of new and seasoned oak hogsheads, predominantly French, for uninhibited maturation. After a maturation of 18 months the wine was blended, naturally clarified and bottled without finings.

In the 1880’s a vineyard of Mourvedre was planted on the outskirts of the Barossa in light sandy soils over clay. Once a majestic vineyard today there are only 106 vines remaining after encroachment from urban development. These vines have show resilience and tenacity to survive over 125 years to produce a wine that is pure history. The very Soul of the Barossa!

The fore fathers of the region had either a grand vision, or simple luck to plant Shiraz in the Barossa. It’s been and continues to be the very essence of our region today and will remain an iconic variety representing some of the oldest vineyards and highest pedigree wines that adorn many of the fine cellars and wine lists of the world. The very Soul of the region.

Vineyards and Vine Age
Fruit was taken from numerous vineyards with vine age ranging from 20 yrs – 70+ years.  Sub Regions include Ebenezer, Kalimna, Eden Valley, Stonewall, Vine Vale and Lights Pass.

Fermentation
All individual parecls of fruit were open fermented very traditionally, with plunging and pumping over twice daily, prior to basket pressing.

Maturation
The wine was matured in a combination of some newer and more older French and American oak hogsheads and puncheons. The oak regime is designed to respect the fruit but to add layers of subtle background oak.

Tasting Note
Dark purple, black hues with dark berry fruit carrying onto the nose with subtle spicy oak. The palate has soft up front notes of plums and blackcurrant with integrated oak structure .  The finish is soft and long. Quintessential Barossan Shiraz that displays elegance, finesse, firm structure and wonderful depth of flavour.
